Investment Manager

Legal & General Reinsurance ("L&G Re") is a Bermuda-based specialist life reinsurer. We are the global reinsurance hub of Legal & General Group Plc, a multinational financial services company established in 1836, and we provide life reinsurance solutions to clients in the UK, Europe, US and Canada.  

The Investment function is critical to the success of L&G Re given its focus on asset-intensive reinsurance. The Investment Manager sits within the Investment team and owns critical processes such as external manager onboarding, portfolio analytics, capital markets assumption setting and other ad-hoc research projects.

Job Description

  • Assisting with Investment manager research, due-diligence – including tax and legal - and operational onboarding processes
  • Assisting with shadow underwriting of credit and structured products deals from external asset managers. Drafting deal opinions that evaluate a proposed transaction based on rating and return and the attractiveness of the new business as part of the Portfolio. Ensuring investments align with portfolio requirements and managing the execution processes along with the asset manager
  • Maintaining pipeline of direct investments through different managers, and working towards managing cash and liquidity appropriately
  • Developing balance sheet portfolio analytics and asset allocation tools to evaluate tactical trading ideas across the Corporate Bonds, Structured Assets and Private Credit universe
  • Coordinating with both internal and external asset managers to source data to monitor North American and European liquid fixed income markets and develop illiquidity premium for direct investments
  • Preparing regular reports and updates on portfolio performance, market trends, and investment metrics to ensure the portfolios continue to meet investment objectives
  • Building and maintaining strong relationships with asset managers, banks, and other key internal and external stakeholders 
  • Collaborating with broader investment team on new business opportunities and assisting with new business portfolio construction 
  • Delivering effective written and verbal communication, including report writing and presenting asset strategy, solutions development and progress to plan at Committee/Board level 
  • Assisting with various tasks and projects as needed, which may include duties outside the primary scope of the job
  • Developing and maintaining highly collaborative and effective relationships at all levels within the organisation, as well as externally with the Company’s investment managers and clients
  • Actively promoting L&G Re’s culture of ownership across the organization and be a role model for L&G behaviours
  • Carrying out duties with integrity, purpose and diligence, ensuring that appropriate professional standards are maintained, that business requirements and deadlines are met, that records are maintained appropriately, and that internal governance and processes are fit for purpose and meet internal and relevant regulatory requirements.

Qualifications

  • Fully qualified CFA or Life Actuary
  • 4-6 years of experience, with a minimum of 2 years directly in trading or structuring experience in derivatives, or structured products or insurance portfolio management
  • In depth knowledge and experience working in key insurance asset classes, including fixed income, equities, private assets and alternatives
  • A demonstrated track record and understanding of the various factors and considerations affecting insurance company strategic asset allocation, and the interactions with liabilities, capital and risk, including the ability to create financial projection and asset models
  • Experience of on-boarding investment managers, including their review and appointment, operational setup and ongoing performance monitoring
  • Strong Bloomberg, Excel and VBA skills
  • A deep commercial awareness and a good understanding of the wider business, economic, market and regulatory environment in which L&G Re operates
  • Demonstrated ability to develop effective professional relationships at all levels throughout an organisation, with experience in senior stakeholder management
  • Demonstrated ability to apply strong technical investment and finance skills, act independently, as well as part of a team, problem solve and apply sound judgement and pragmatism in order to achieve business aims
  • Must be very organised, highly efficient and enjoy working in a fast-paced dynamic environment, with the ability deliver reliable work of a high quality in demanding timescales in a small company environment
